Artist Statement:
Objects have the power of carrying memories across space, time, culture and generations. They are something with physical properties like shape, color, and weight. But when a person engages with them, they start to convey thoughts, emotions, and stories. Particular objects work as vessels of holding my memories and stories. My emotions can be accentuated by depicting them. More meanings can be made by sculpting them. Then my memory gets thick and vivid by sharing them. Loss of my father, who was living in Korea, was an unbearable incident. I couldn’t figure out what I should do with all these beautiful memories of him. Especially whenever I see these sweet American candies. My father had strong childhood memory on American sweets. He experienced Korean war as a child. It was a dreadful moment in Korean modern history, however American sweets were some kind of a relief to my father. He always told me how sweet they were and how he got more them than other kids from American soldiers. As long as I remember, he always had American sweets in his shirt pocket. Now he had gone. But whenever I see those sweet imported candies, I think of my father who once was a happy boy. Objects have the power of carrying memories across space, time, culture and generations. Life comes and goes, but Objects and arts remain.
